Our Name

Gaiam (pronounced "guy-um"), is a fusion of the words "Gaia" and "I am." Gaia, mother Earth, was honored on the Isle of Crete in ancient Greece 5,000 years ago by the Minoan civilization. This civilization valued education, art, science, recreation, and the environment and believed that the Earth was directly connected to its existence and daily life. The concept of Gaia stems from the ancient philosophy that the Earth is a living entity. At Gaiam, we believe that all of the Earth’s living matter, air, oceans and land form an interconnected system that can be seen as a single entity. The word Gaiam represents planetary awareness, preservation and support of the interconnectivity of all living things. By nurturing, protecting and respecting our planet, its natural resources and its inhabitants, we enrich our own lives and those of future generations.

The world we live in is created by visions we hold. By focusing our energy on what inspires us rather than on what we fear, we manifest the world we desire. Together we make a difference.

Millions of people are yearning to make positive changes for their health and spirituality, their communities and the planet. We founded Gaiam to raise their collective voice. Ten years ago, we set out to focus millions of people who desired to live a healthier and more sustainable life around their common purpose, and define a theme we named LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability). Today, LOHAS is the title of magazines in the United States, Japan and other countries. It’s a hot topic in media ranging from Business Week to The New York Times and a term that returns millions of results on Google. These factors have allowed us to begin creating the concept of LOHAS community.

Meanwhile, our logo – a symbol of the Flower of Life – is becoming recognized as the symbol for trusted LOHAS media content, information and solutions. Our logo is a part of the design that symbolized creation before the time of ancient Egypt. The Gaiam logo is a window into what we stand for.

The authenticity and entrepreneurial spirit behind LOHAS propelled it into the mainstream, and today these qualities are helping us catalyze positive change in the media industry. We’re established a new conscious media genre and distribution channels for filmmakers and artists who want to make a difference. Joining other genres like classics, drama and action, conscious media includes feature films, documentaries, edutainment and personal development programs that inspire us to expand our awareness, pursue positive change in our lives and grow more connected to each other and to the planet.

While an entrepreneurial spirit has helped us achieve these milestones, we have kept Gaiam debt-free with plenty of cash to advance our vision.

Environmental Responsibility

Gaiam launched the world’s first carbon-neutral product shipping program in 2006. Partnering with The Conservation Fund, we created our Go ZeroSM program to involve our millions of customers in climate-change action and build awareness about the impact of carbon dioxide emissions.

We have offset our corporate carbon footprint by purchasing nearly 1,500 trees through Go Zero to offset the CO2 impact of our operations at our headquarters and distribution center.

Gaiam sources our 30% post-consumer waste paper from a sustainable forest managed by the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC©). PEFC is the world’s largest nongovernmental organization that promotes sustainably managed forests. Like FSC, PEFC ensures we’re using the highest-quality paper at the lowest possible environmental cost. Catalogs are 100% recyclable anywhere magazines are accepted for recycling. By using nonvirgin fibers in our catalogs, we’ve saved nearly 50,000 trees and 9 million pounds of greenhouse gases.

The number of catalogs our customers receive is based on past purchasing activity. We encourage customers to request limiting the number of catalogs we send them and to shop our web site, where all products are featured, allowing customers to stop receiving catalogs entirely.

We use 100% recyclable and biodegradable eco-conscious packaging for all media. Designed to make the smallest environmental footprint possible, the lightweight, tough and resilient packaging is made from 100% post-consumer waste and is printed with soy-based ink.

Through our majority ownership of expedition company Natural Habitat Adventures, Gaiam provides individual and group eco-travel. Natural Habitat carries Gaiam’s mission, partnering with World Wildlife Fund to educate travelers on the importance of protecting and preserving the awe-inspiring wildlife and wild lands.

Gaiam is committed to zero-waste standards at our corporate office, adding composting collection to an already robust recycling program that includes materials not collected in most businesses, such as paperboard and yogurt containers. We reuse shipping containers and use biodegradable packing at our distribution center, and provide opportunity for employees to join off-site stream cleanups and Habitat for Humanity projects.

We have continued as a major supporter of the nonprofit Solar Living Institute, a green living and renewable energy learning mecca that hosts 200,000 visitors a year. In 2006 we sponsored an SLI Earth Day for Kids field trip for 50 inner-city fifth graders, and in 2007 we sponsored approximately 250 students.

Social Responsibility

One World by Gaiam™: Bringing People Together Through Fair Trade

We have partnered with Fair Trade, an organized social movement that promotes standards for international labor, environmentalism, and social policy, empowering artisans to maintain cultural traditions and create better lives for their families and communities. We travel the globe to find fair trade partners, providing livable wages, skills training and sustainable business development — helping to break the cycle of poverty. Our growing list of Fair Trade partners includes artisans in Cambodia, India and Vietnam.

Non-Gaiam branded products are sourced only from companies that verify their use of fair labor practices, which includes maintaining social responsibility in their factories.

Gaiam does not knowingly do business with any companies that do not adhere to basic humanitarian practices. We screen our factories for a commi™ent to social responsibility and fair wages as well as efficiencies in materials usage. We demand a minimum of compliance with local labor standards in all Gaiam contracted factories and we are investigating codes of conduct and international monitoring programs in order to verify the quality of working conditions and fair wages in our partner factories.

For three consecutive years, Gaiam has ranked in the top tiers of Business Ethics magazine’s 100 Best Corporate citizens list.
